Adding content is fundamental in ensuring a high search engine rank.
Essentially the more often the content on your site changes the more often search engine spiders will come to your site. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo! like to keep the data on their sites up to date. If you don’t change your site at all, they will only check periodically to see if anything has changed, just in case. However if you change your content daily, they will come back daily, to update their own systems. The spiders learn how often you change your site, so equally if you change it weekly they will come every week.
By adding regular content to your site, you make your site worthwhile for users to come back. Every time a user returns to your site, the more a community around your business will grow. Just imagine how good it would be if everyone involved in your industry HAD to visit your site daily or even weekly, just to keep up with what’s going on. The more traffic your site has, the more the search engines think your site is worth while to users, so will put you higher up in the ranking.
This useful, informative or even fun content you add, could then be linked to from other peoples’ sites. All these genuine incoming links add to your page rank as the search engines believe you have useful content there. Similarly people who go to these sites may also click the link through to yours, increasing your traffic.
From the customers point of view, updating your content makes your company look better. If you write your articles in a friendly manner, your company will come across friendly too. Visitors may well not read your articles or even care what they’re about, but what they will notice is up to date information and a company that’s still active. Have you ever been to a site that looks old and has out of date information on it? Did you wonder if they were still in business? Most importantly, did you buy any products or services from them?
If you have regular updates, people are more willing to subscribe to your RSS feed. See the benefits of RSS.
So the nuts and bolts of it all is that if you regularly add new, informative and relevant content to your site, you will gain more traffic and a better search engine ranking. And that’s a good few steps closer to new customers!
